Attendance Allowance
(AA)
Attendance Allowance is a non-means-tested, tax-free weekly benefit for people aged 67 or over who need help with personal care or supervision because of a physical or mental disability or illness. It is paid at two rates depending on whether care is needed during the day, night, or both.
Attendance Allowance is paid by the DWP to people aged 67 or over who need help with personal care or supervision. The lower rate (£73.90/week in 2025/26) is for those needing day or night help; the higher rate (£110.40/week) is for those needing help both day and night, or who are terminally ill. It is not means-tested and does not depend on having paid National Insurance. Receiving AA can unlock access to other benefits such as Pension Credit, Council Tax Reduction, and Carer's Allowance for a carer. A common pitfall is underestimating your needs on the claim form — describe your worst days, not your best. Claims are made on form AA1A (by post or phone: 0800 731 0122). There is no mobility component, unlike PIP. If refused, you must request a Mandatory Reconsideration before appealing to the First-tier Tribunal (Social Entitlement Chamber).
